The Nursing Education program at SWIC prepares graduates with the basic skills necessary to become a registered nurse (RN). Registered nurses provide for the physical, mental and emotional needs of their patients.
Job duties vary based on the specialty area:
All nurses must have knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing, interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, ability to relate to different cultural and economic backgrounds, organize, set priorities, and manage a caseload. See NE Program Mission and Goals.
The NE program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), located at 3343 Peachtree Road, NE, Suite 500, Atlanta, GA, 30326; phone: 404-975-5000. Verification of program accreditation can be viewed at the NLNAC Web site. This accreditation makes our graduates eligible to sit for the computer adaptive NCLEX-RN examination. To practice as a registered nurse, graduates must pass the NCLEX-RN exam.
Refer to the NE Application Planning Guide or for current LPNs, check the Advanced Standing Application Planning Guide and the Special Application FAQ link for detailed information. Upon acceptance, a criminal background check and random drug testing is required.
A graduate of the Nursing Education program is prepared to work as a RN following a successful NCLEX-RN exam. In general, they will work in entry level positions under the direction of a more experienced RN in hospitals, public/community health settings, ambulatory care settings and nursing homes/extended care facilities.
Graduates who successfully complete the NCLEX-RN may also opt to continue their education at institutions which offer RN-BSN and RN-MSN programs. Employment is projected to grow by 23 percent from 2006-2016, much faster than average for all occupations. Averaged over three years, 95 percent of SWIC NE graduates passed the NCLEX-RN examination on the first attempt.
