What is it?

The mission of the Legacy program is to increase the retention and graduation rates of first-generation college students by offering academic and personal support. This ten-week program is offered in both the fall and spring semesters at the Belleville Campus and the East St. Louis Community College Center.

Criteria

  • Neither parent holds a bachelor's degree
  • Enrolled in the current semester
  • Attend at least four workshops each semester - one may be completed online through WebCT.

Goals of the Legacy Program

  • Ease the fear and anxiety about attending college through workshops, personal guidance,mentors and academic support
  • Keep students motivated and encouraged through interaction with successful SWIC students
  • Help students build their self-confidence
  • Provide students with the guidance and information they need to progress through college more easily
  • Increase awareness and use of support services, programs and activities at the college
