Nontraditional Careers Program

The Nontraditional Careers Program serves Southwestern Illinois College students who are enrolled or considering enrollment in career and technical education programs which lead to nontraditional careers.

SWIC supports the idea that a career path should be chosen with an individual's interests, abilities, values and experiences in mind. Neither females nor males should be limited to particular careers because of their gender.

The program provides currently enrolled and prospective students with:

  • Information on nontraditional careers
  • Assistance in:
    • Career exploration
    • Internships
    • Career mentoring
    • Job search
    • Job opportunities

What is a nontraditional career?

A nontraditional career is defined as one in which a particular gender comprises less than 25 percent of the individuals employed in that occupation. Some examples of vocational and technical programs at SWIC that lead to nontraditional employment can be found here.
