(Burlington, Ia., Nov. 6) – The Southwestern Illinois College men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 in the 2009-10 season with a 75-73 victory against Marshalltown CC at the Southeastern Classic. Sophomore guard Kenny Leverette (O’Fallon, Ill. / O’Fallon) hit an eight-footer jumper with 1.9 seconds left to lift Blue Storm to the win.

Freshman center Aaron Nelson (Sauk Village, Ill. / Bloom Township) poured in a team-high 15 points to lead the way for the Blue Storm.

SWIC held a slight 37-36 lead at intermission, but opened the second half on a 21-13 run to push its advantage to 58-49 with just over 10 minutes to play. The Tigers responded with a 24-15 of its own to tie the game at 73 with 22 seconds left.

Sophomore point guard Mykel Cleveland (Mobile, Al. / Williamson) chipped in nine points, while Leverette posted nine points in a reserve role off the bench.

Will Clyburn scored a game-high 28 points for Marshalltown (0-1), including 8-of-10 from the free throw line in the contest. DeMarcus Phillips connected for 23.

Southwestern Illinois College returns to action Saturday to take on the host school in the Southeastern Community College Classic at 5 p.m.
