Become an AmeriCorps member and serve at a neighborhood organization, local non-profit or school. Members will provide direct service by tutoring students in Belleville District #118 schools, or recruit and train community residents to support various neighborhood, school or community specific activities, while completing service projects serving the city of Belleville, and earn an education award for future higher education or to pay off existing student loan debt.
Established in 1995, Belleville AmeriCorps, a partnership between Southwestern Illinois College, the city of Belleville, District #118 and Franklin Neighborhood Community Association (FNCA), is a federally funded program dedicated to improving students' academics, and addressing community based needs, such as housing, crime, and safety. The program services families and community residents by placing members as Tutors, Computer Coaches, Program and Neighborhood Volunteer Coordinators and Summer Camp Counselors at District #118 schools, FNCA and other community organizations.
AmeriCorps members may serve as full-time for one year completing 1700 hours or part-time completing 900 hours (additional types of positions requiring fewer hours are available including Federal Work Study). Members receive a modest living allowance, an education award up to $4,725, a metro and bus pass, and full-time members qualify for health insurance, and may be eligible for Student Loan Forbearance during the service year with partial or full payment of interest after service. Belleville AmeriCorps provides members the opportunity for skills development and training-a chance to build one's resume and work portfolio-and support and guidance throughout the service year. Belleville AmeriCorps is an equal opportunity organization.
